We were tasked with managing the server infrastructure for a large Commercial Property firm. All of its systems were managed in-house, and in addition to the standard office services (email etc.) it had some major database applications, plus a number of bespoke applications and services written to enhance business processes. Owing to the complexity and need for interoperability between all these systems, staff had been unable to perform a gradual upgrade process over the years, and were now extremely concerned about the age of their hardware infrastructure.

Following an in-depth consultative and audit process with key staff and system providers, we determined that the cheapest, simplest and least disruptive option was to replace all of the current server hardware. In fact, over a three year period it was actually cheaper to perform this replacement, rather than struggle on with the existing equipment, since the cost of the current hardware support contracts was greater than the cost of the new hardware, which came bundled with support.

By replacing the infrastructure wholesale, the systems could be migrated to new servers one by one, ensuring that they were constantly available to all staff members. In the process, the server operating systems could be upgraded to their modern equivalents, leveraging all the benefits and security that these provided. This in-place upgrade was sufficient in itself to justify the project in the minds of the management team.

We undertook the specification, procurement, installation, and migration of the systems, and in the process we reorganised the computer room. We left the company with a stable, modern, and comfortable operating environment, both in a physical and logical sense.
